If we want our children learn to read, they need to read. If your two year old child goes to her bookshelf and chooses her favorite book she has already read. It recognizes the cover of the book that you may have read aloud a hundred times in the past.
She plops herself on the floor and opens the book and begins to speak, which may or may not resemble the actual words to mutter. Even if they only chime in on familiar words while you read a bookloud, she is already reading. Why? Because she found meaning in print.
So where do we start? Cherry Pua Africa in the "Couch Potatoes Book Potatoes Series" shares with us these special tips:
o If your child is still young, rhymes beginning with kindergarten.
o Recite a nursery rhyme or two per day. There are television shows, full of rhymes. This reading will play familiar ears with the sound and rhythm of words.
o listen to rap musicthe ears, an artistic way of sharing acclimatize syllables and words. This would also provide a sense of movement to words.
o As you read rhymes and nonsense words invented, make sounds in your mouth. Play with words and language can see how to transform images of words and emotions.
